2017 AOC Sancerre 'Auksinis Macération' (Magnum)
Sauvignon Blanc from a 1ha parcel in Verdigny, grown on clay and limestone (caillottes). The vines average 50 years of age. Whole bunch maceration for 10 days (semi carbonic), with only golden grapes that were harvested the same day as Auksinis. 50% botrytis. Pressed off, then fermented and aged for two years in tank, then one year in old barrels. Zero SO2.
Not too dark, more transparent this year. Salty cumquat goodness with hints of gingerbread. Fresh, clean and restrained. Not too punchy. Blood orange, herbs and ginger. Fine texture - linear, with perfectly balanced acidity. It’s more tight than flamboyant. Medium plus acidity, really approachable. Heaps of detail, but the restraint is enormous. Very tidy straight off the boat. Everything seems smoother and more integrated, more sophisticated. Toasted apricots, dried apricots, peaches, blood orange and cumquat. An amazing orange wine with huge detail, that will rival some of the best.
