2017 VDF ‘La Desirée’
Some of these Chenin vines are over 100 years old. The wine stayed in various sized old barrels on the lees for just over a year. It has a haunting complexity that will keep you puzzled, whilst at the same time has a relaxed friendly vibe that will make you feel like you’re right at home. It is an amazing wine. Zero sulfites.
The colour on this shines so brightly and is instantly pleasing to look at. As with all of his Chenins, it is tight on opening, but spreads it's wings rather quickly. Decanting is always a good option, even if just to look at its magical appearance and colour. On the nose you have lemon curd, a touch of apple, croissants and a slight ozone note. There are delicate florals, minerals, and that smell of underground Loire cellar. This greets the mouth with so much pleasure - it also has a medium texture, but higher acidity that lifts it up and gives it much more vibrancy. The mouth-watering acidity really lingers as well, showing off its zesty characteristics. The balance is impeccable, as is the incredible length. With time the tension really builds, offering line and direction. It really is an electric example of a superb and complete Chenin Blanc.
