2016 AOC Moulin-à-Vent 'Docteur Buchaille'

Julie Balagny

Regular price $90 750ml Sale

Named after her neighbour, who helps out in the vineyards. From 0.7ha of vines planted in 1913. The solis here are granite and quartz. 3 weeks cold carbonic maceration, then 6-7 months in old barrels. No fining or filtration, then bottled by hand, and sealed with bees wax. Only 1,800 bottles produced. Zero SO2.

Please note: This wine has about a 4 hour drinking window before mouse sets in. You will no doubt finish it a lot faster, but just don't decant it or keep some for the next day. It's a beautiful wine, but it's fragile. So please treat it with care :) Slightly darker in colour than En Rémont, but still in the lighter spectrum, almost like a Poulsard. The aromas here feel slightly more wrapped up, and perhaps are building into something great as the wine ages in bottle. Nonetheless, there is strawberry, cherry and red delicious apple, intertwined amongst coffee, carob, dark red roses, and that signature bitter herb/orange rind - almost campari-like smell. This has that supple texture, that drifts effortlessly on your palate, silky and slippery and is ultimately charming. While you could say this has a touch more power, it is more in the mineral detail and super fine tannin structure, but remains completely elegant and almost fragile in its expression. You feel the delicate tapping of the microscopic tannins and minerality on the tip of your tongue, right on the finish, giving this wine an extra layer of complexity compared with it's Fleurie counterpart.  An ultimate expression from this cru of Beaujolais, a mesmerising wine to say the least. To drink now, or reward yourself and age a few bottles...
