2016 VDF 'Surin'

Les Jardins de Theseiis

Surin is the old local name for Sauvignon Blanc in the Loir-et-Cher. Whole bunch, direct press, with ferment commencing in fibreglass. Transferred to old barrels for 18 months. No fining or filtration. Zero SO2.

If you've tried Surin before, you know this is no ordinary Sauvignon Blanc. Almost orange, or a golden straw colour – and this is not from maceration but just from gentle oxidation from time in barrel. Smells like ripe pineapple and straw, with a myriad of citrusy notes. There are hints of wild herbs in the breeze too, but only just. I love that you can smell Loire cellar in these wines - I can't explain it, but I love it! To taste there is Mandarin spray, lemon, honey, and apples. Very textural, but super fresh. The wine lacquers the mouth, but remains energetic. The texture is sensational, and this wine feels like it will age well. Nice acidity, and finishes fresh with little mandarin droplets. More of a meal wine, and will suit the colder months. Tiny bitter notes on finish and nice limestone grip rings out for a while. Last sip – citrusy lemon, lime, and super juicy. Bloody delicious, and a winner for any savvy-b hater! Minerality comes to the forefront a bit later on too, and I'm thinking more mandarin than pineapple on that finish. Love it!
