2014 VDF 'El Pépé'

Domaine des Quatre Pierres

Regular price $42 750ml Sale

100 % Carignan. These are the oldest vines, being 70 years of age. Edouard says this is a tribute wine, in respect of our seniors. The grapes undergo carbonic maceration (whole bunch). After 13 days of fermentation the grapes are pressed and left in barrels (4-6 years of age) for 10 months. 15mg/L SO2 at bottling.

The first thing you notice is the perfume - how good is old vine Carignan! It's pretty, but rugged. Wild flowers, spice and herbs, with black currants and wild boysenberries. And that tamarind note again. Quite a powerful complex nose that opens up with air. Some chocolate notes too. A hint of green – like someone is burning forests miles away and you can smell it faintly. Juicy and chewy, crunchy and very nice acidity. Tannins mingle around for a bit. Dense, but fresh. Slightly peppery on the finish. A food wine, would be amazing with a piece of steak, or even just some mild, hard cheese.
