2020 VDF 'Cartagène - Vin Muté'
500ml. This is a fortified wine, and something that the brothers’ grandparents used to traditionally make in the south. They add home made grappa halfway through fermentation to kill the yeast and ensure some sugar remains. 100% Syrah grown on white clay. Direct press, then aged in old barrels for just over a month. They bottled it early to preserve the amazing aromas. Two months in bottle prior to release. Zero SO2. 16.4% alc. This is rosé or light red in appearance, and very gently sweet. It can be drank as an aperitif, or after dinner with cheese. Keeps in the fridge for a few days as well. Only 24 bottles in Australia. First in first served.
Light red colour. Floral, pretty and pure. One of the best sweet wines I’ve had the pleasure of smelling. Bright, deep, honest and raw. Strawberries, cherries, violets and herbs. Lacquerous texture. Not too sweet which is nice. Bright in the mouth. Very tasty. Strawberry, raspberry, rose, red cherry and white pepper. Welcoming minute hint of bitterness on the finish, like Campari. Gentle liquorice notes too. Light and delicate. Strawberries in the stars. Refinement. Elegance – which is not always common in sweet wines. Very well balanced. Gentle spice. Long and flavourful. Not sickly like a lot of sweet wines, you could drink a few glasses with ease. Mineral finish. Serve chilled.
