2020 VDF 'Coqueyron Haut' (Magnum)

Les Frères Soulier

Regular price $180 1500ml Sale

A light yet powerful red. Grenache planted by their grandfather in 1964. The soils are sandy with round pebbles composed of quartz. They lost 90% of the grapes to the frosts in 2020, and so decided to make magnums only – just 24 made it to Australia. Short maceration and aged in old oak barrels for two months, then two further months in magnum prior to release. Zero SO2. Only 24 magnums in Australia. First in first served.

Medium red/purple colour – lighter than expected, but has dark red rose tinges. Perfume is very aromatic, and starts with dark roses. Seems elegant, but also has dark powerful undertones. Bay, savoury aspects, roses, stems, campari, iron, black rock vein, and strawberry elixir magic. It's complex, and a pleasure to smell. Dusty spice and chocolate at the back. Everything is powdery on the nose. More rose lift through the nose, with a scattering of red fruits. Split between earth and fruit. With time in the glass the fruit dissipates and the savouriness rises to the forefront. On the palate it is powerful, yet refined. Linear authority. Length, flavour and drive. Wild berries, savoury notes, and earth. Gentle spice and garrigue. It's almost hinting at volcanic in mineral nature. There is a very fine tannic structure and medium acidity, making this wine super suave. Also not a session wine, more of a special occasion magnum to have with a meal. Very fresh in the mouth, followed by lots of detail. Pretty epic. Serve chilled.
