2016 AOC Sancerre 'Les Quarterons'
Sauvignon Blanc from two parcels totalling 4ha, across Verdigny and Sancerre. 30 year old vines on average, grown on clay and limestone. 20% botryitis. Direct press into stainless steel tank, then élevage for 2 years in tank. 10ppm SO2 at bottling.
Of all the wines, this is probably the closest you'll get to the usual Sancerre style, but it is still completely in a league of its own. If you don't want to stray too far for the norm, then this is an exceptional wine, especially for the price. Intensely aromatic - and and in a good way. Initially there is fresh cut grass - not normal grass, a special kind of grass no one knows about! Lemon, barley, ozone, flowers - there is so much going on. And then when you drink – the depth of flavour is intense, but somehow it has this firing line of acid and drive and energy streamlined right through it, pulling all the other components with it, creating a revelation of a wine. An elixir with incredible energy. The light shining from this is insane. It instantly wakes you up. So powerful, yet every element is executed to the highest level. I can’t say enough, you just have to try it to understand it!
