Pineau d’Aunis – 2/3 from 2020 macerated with 1/3 of the same wine from 2019. Fruit from 55 year old vines, grown on loam, clay and limestone soils. 80% de-stemmed by hand. Two week maceration in tank – then press juice and free run juice assembled before ageing in old barrels for 10 months. Not fined or filtered. Zero added SO2 at any stage.
Lots of depth here with a beautiful perfume. White pepper, wild boysenberries, forest, and exotic spice. It’s wonderful how they can extract so much without going overboard. Very bright and fresh in the mouth, with good mid-palate density. Great acidity, fine tannins, and a long, lingering finish. A lively and super tasty example of this obscure variety.
