2018 VDF 'Alien'
Aligoté from 90 year old vineyards, grown on clay and limestone. Direct press, fermentation, and then élevage for 12 months in concrete tanks. Zero SO2. Originally this was called AligoT, but the AOC people threw a tantrum, so he changed it to Alien.
Nice clear yellow colour. It offers up aromas of lemon, lime, honeydew melon, nectarine and chalk. Very pure and fresh to smell. The taste is clear and vibrant too. Great energy and loose knit texture. Perhaps this is more expressive because it has no added sulfites. Full mid palate, juicy and long. Vibrant lemon flavours, with crisp apple, and great length. Really opens up with air. Nice stony minerality, and generous flavour. Excellent balance between texture, medium acidity and tension. This wine illustrates Aligoté with a softer but tidy appearance, rather than intense and piercing. Medium bodied, perfectly ripe fruit, and seamless to drink. On day two or three it becomes more zippy and zesty, with lime over rocks and more noticeable tension. Great expression of this variety.
