This orange wine, born from accepting the moment in which we are, that is, understanding that climate change is a reality and being aware of how it affects the maturation of the grape. Because of this, Ferran started looking for solutions to this matter, until he heard about Carignan blanc. A variety that matures well and maintains a BRUTAL acidity. Then, he had it clear – he had to make a wine! An idea for the future of Penedès.
6 years ago, this small Carignan blanc vineyard was planted on shallow, clayey and extremely calcareous soil. The terrain was selected to slow down the vigour of the variety. This means less production and more concentrated grapes. A dry year, but the rain finally came in Sept. Harvested on 28 Sept. 50% of the grapes were de-stemmed and 50% pressed. Afterwards, everything is mixed for fermentation - spontaneous skin contact fermentation in stainless steel. Pigeage 1-3 times a day for 3 weeks. At the end of the fermentation, and after removing the lees, the wine remained in contact with 30% of the skins for 93 days. Afterwards, the juice is bled into 160L terracotta amphora, where it aged for 4 months. Not fined or filtered. 12.5% alc.
Light amber colour. Nose of salt and spiced citrus peel. Some memories of old white fruit and white truffle. Not super aromatic, but refined and incredibly intriguing – keeps you guessing, what is that? Fresh and pure in the mouth, with brightness, linear texture and extremely fine phenolic grip. It’s savoury rather than fruity, with minerality in spades and an underlying juiciness. Finishes with a pleasant bitter note and grip. Such a cool wine, very elegant with lots of finesse – which is rare for orange wines. Plus, how often do you see Carignan blanc!?
