2019 AOC Fleurie 'cayenne'

Julie Balagny

The AOC in Fleurie are apparently easier to deal with, so both this wine and En Remont have the AOC. Cayenne is made with grapes from Julie's younger vines in Fleurie. The vines are 35 and 40 years old. The soils are made up mainly of granite and basalt, with the remainder pink granite and quartz.
5 weeks carbonic maceration, then raised in old barrels for 10 months. Not fined or filtered. Zero SO2 at any stage.

Darker colour. Wild berries, blueberries and wild herbs. There is the granite - seems darker, but the perfectly ripe fruit is light and lifted. It’s deep and so nice. This is a serious adult wine, and while some of her previous wines have been great, but a bit loose – this seems to be extremely well balanced and slightly more polished dare I say it. Black roses and hints of liquorice mix into a cauldron of eternal perfume. Darker, yet lifted. Pungent, yet approachable. This is seriously wow. I can’t explain it – I love the lightness of some of her wines – this has more depth with that lightness, but a certain elegance. Black strawberries coming through as it warms up. Acidity is medium and so nice. As I write this, I think - what other Beaujolais is like this? None, it's so unique. Dark roses emerge to the forefront. Gentle tart acidity and the texture is deep. Can be a drinking wine yes, but this is a nice meal wine to really study. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I love it. So much freedom and expression, yet managed with care and thought. Brilliant.
