2017 VDF 'AK400'
100% Gamay. 20% whole bunch, short maceration in fibreglass. Transferred to old barrels for 18 months. Not fined or filtered, bottled by gravity. Zero SO2.
Dark cherries, bramble and dark chocolate hit you first. There is an underlying power with this wine, slightly more dark and brooding than its 2016 counterpart. Underneath, pretty florals and blueberries come to the surface. It's a wine with many layers that takes time to unfold. A very full palate, powerful yet fresh. There is that cherry stone note, and a wonderful tart acidity that sings in your mouth. It's deep and sexy, with plenty of tension. The tannins are ever so sticky, and linger for a time. A food wine, and while it's slightly darker, it has a beautiful crunch and freshness about it. Leave it open for days and watch it evolve. Serve chilled.
