2018 VDF 'AK400'
100% Gamay. 30% whole bunch, 11 days maceration in fibreglass. Transferred to old barrels for 12 months. Zero SO2.
Dark colour with shiny red edges. Energy! Bursting with blueberry and blackberry goodness, wafts of dark cocoa dust, and that dark mineral smell. Heavenly aromas, just with more depth than in previous years. More extraction, but carefully managed, and pleasantly surprising. Fresh on the palate, it is extremely juicy and palate staining. There is plenty of depth and power, carefully harnessed by the delightful acidity which pulls it all into place. Tiny gas bubbles for the lift, creating that energy sensation with extra freshness. Steam roller of juicy goodness blasting through, get prepared and lookout! Full mid palate, with a beautiful tartness on the finish. Fine tannins and limestone freshness lingers. You can drink this now, but it definitely has ageing potential if you have patience. Minerality builds as the wine breathes. Damn, so juicy!
