2017 AOC Beaujolais-Villages 'Vieilles Vignes'
Certified organic. From vines planted before 1918. Very low yields of 15hl/ha. Carbonic maceration for 8 days, then fermentation completed in concrete tanks. Half aged in concrete, half aged in old oak. Bottled June 2018. Resting in bottle and developing to the point of perfect drinking. One to age as well. 10mg sulfites at bottling.
A big step up in terms of power and complexity, yet maintains freshness and elegance. A very stylish wine that displays an array of aromas and flavours that only build over time. You have notes of roses, wild berries and liquorice. The granite speaks volumes too. On the palate the fruit is deeper, but silky. Raw meats, wild berries, with lighter red fruits at the plateau. The tannins are more prominent in this wine, but are soft and chewy. Traces of spices, cocoa and minerals linger, and surround the core of unctuous fruit. I love drinking this wine - super complex and delicious, and stands up against some of it's Burgundy counterparts - except with a much more desirable price tag...
