2018 AOC Chénas 'Les Journets'

Domaine Saint-Cyr

Regular price $70 750ml Sale

This 2ha plot was purchased by the family in 2017, and in 2018 was in its 2nd year of conversion to organic. Very poor soils here, with white granite, and quite rocky at 30cm of depth. Some vines are 25 years old, others 55 years old. 21 days carbonic maceration, and then 80% was aged in old barrels, 20% in concrete, for 15 months. 10ppm SO2 before bottling.

Beautiful nose – highly expressive with wild berry, black cherries and spice. Nothing too flamboyant – just class. Stem, fruit, spice, cocoa dust and earth – it’s all in balance. Very clean. In the mouth it’s the same. Fine and long, with intricately woven layers of quality fruit, lacy tannin and beautiful acidity. The mid palate is packed, but straight and tight. Forest berry fruit with some dark apple crunch on the finish. With air, it opens up and becomes even more floral, and you sense the impression of the granite as well. Quite fresh for 2018 - there's a reason I re-ordered it a second time for this release! Serve slightly chilled.
