2019 VDF 'Docteur Briçou'

Julie Balagny

Regular price $95 750ml Sale

Julie has 0.7 hectares of old vines in Moulin-à-Vent, planted in 1913 - here the soils are granite and quartz. And the wine is named after her friend Brice (Briçou is his nickname), who has helped her for the last two years. It's a name change from Docteur Buchaille, her other friend and neighbour (Julien Buchaille) who also helps out. Neither of them are real doctors... but they like to prescribe wine... ;) 3 weeks carbonic maceration, then raised in old barrels for 10 months. Not fined or filtered. Please note - one barrel had mouse, and so Julie decided to add 1mg/L SO2 to that barrel. The mouse disappeared. No SO2 was used in any of the other barrels. So basically undetectable, but I wanted to mention this to be transparent. And please note - there is definitely no mouse in the final wine!

Very clean this year also. Wild blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry. Exotic spice. Just waiting to unleash. Lifted aromatics. Restrained elegance. Black rock flecks of detail, perhaps the most mineral of the bunch. Very pretty, but with lots of substance. As it warms up, the layers of perfume unfold. This is one of the lightest, cleanest expression she has made – but it has depth and weight. Can’t wait to see in 10 years. Silky to drink. Medium bodied, elegant fruit – a blend of sweet and savoury, layer upon layer. Blackberry and boysenberry flavours. Silky and seductive. Grainy tannins and medium acidity. Hints of preserved orange rind and spice. This is tasting amazing now, but the future is big time. Big nose of violets and roses. Sweet fruit, amazing entry. Tiny volatile lift, but integrated and barely noticeable. More floral and open on day two as well. Great future.
